Justice Dr Ian Freckelton AO KC is one of Australia’s leading barristers, legal scholars, and jurists. His Honour was admitted to the Victorian Bar in 1988 and took silk in 2007. His Honour’s qualifications are BA (Hons), LLB (Syd), PhD (Griff), LLD (Melb), Dip Th M (ANH), FAAL, FAAHMS, FASSA, FACLM (Hon). His Honour was sworn in as a Judge of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Naeoro in 2017.
Dr Freckelton practises throughout Australia and is a mediator and has been a member of eleven statutory tribunals, including currently Australia’s Administrative Review Tribunal. He is also a Professor of Law and Professorial Fellow in Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne, an Adjunct Professor of Forensic Medicine at Monash University, and a prolific author and editor with more than 50 books and hundreds of scholarly publications to his name. He is widely recognised for his expertise in administrative and public law, human rights law, criminal law, personal injury law, and appellate advocacy.
In 2021, Dr Freckelton was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to the law and the legal profession. His extensive judicial, tribunal, academic, and professional experience continues to contribute significantly to the administration of justice in Nauru and across the region.
