Justice Matthew Brady brings more than three decades of legal experience to the bench, with an extensive background in commercial, corporate, administrative, and public law.
Justice Brady holds a Master of Laws from the Queensland University of Technology, a Bachelor of Laws (Honours), and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Queensland. He was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1994 and was called to the Bar of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1999. In recognition of his distinguished legal practice and advocacy, he was appointed King’s Counsel in 2016.
His Honour was appointed as a Judge for the Supreme Court of Nauru in 2022, where his Honour adjudicates on appeals from the Refugee Status Review Tribunal. Justice Brady practises at the Queensland Bar, where he has developed a broad civil and commercial practice. His areas of expertise included corporate law and governance, professional indemnity insurance, negligence and contract claims, administrative law, trade practices, and complex commercial disputes. Throughout his career, he has frequently appeared before superior courts and tribunals, including in significant matters involving the Australian Securities and Investments Commission and other entities of the Commonwealth of Australia.
Justice Brady has made substantial contributions to the legal profession through his service with the Bar Association of Queensland. He has served as a member and Chair of the Migration Law Committee, a member of the Professional Conduct Committee and the South Pacific Legal Education Committee, and as a regular presenter and moot judge for the Bar Practice Course. Earlier in his career, he also tutored in the law of evidence at the Queensland University of Technology.
In addition to his professional achievements, Justice Brady has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to community service through teaching advocacy and delivering continuing legal education courses in Queensland, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Nauru.
